Transitions and The Three Step Rule

When you have possession of the ball you are either the one with the ball at her feet or any other of the 10 players who can help her. After passing, dribbling or shooting you must quickly change roles into an option. An easy way to do this is using the three step rule. After one passes the ball they must take three steps to become a viable passing option. (Blank, 19) This three step rule gives the player with the ball a quick passing option in which after can become another option. For smart players the three step rule is a very valuable habit. (Blank, 19)

Here is a video of me passing, one of the options when you receive the ball.

Here is a video of me dribbling, another option once you receive the ball.

The third and final video is to shoot when you get the ball

Transitioning is key into a quick speed of play. The game is ever changing and so does your role in the play. On my team this topic is often integrated into drills. For example a team must have all their players in a certain area before they can shoot or score a point. Every position on the field requires some sort of transitioning. Defenders must step up from their territory to the 50 when your team has possession. Mid -fielders must transition both ways, into the attack and also back into defense to support. Forwards must shift into the attacking third to then attack.

Below is the explanation of a game to help your team transition fast and efficiently. My team has played this game multiple times.

Two attacking and one defending team drill is a very good example. Before explaining the drill set out a 15yd  by 15yd area and divide into three even teams.(Blank,20)  There will be one ball and two teams will begin passing the ball and keeping possession while the other team will defend and try to regain possession. If the defending team wins possession they automatically become attacking team with the team that didn't lose the ball. When a team loses the ball they immediately become a defending and switches roles. This drill has helped my team quickly transition into the attack or back into defense.

If you play soccer or if you don't, when you receive a pass what option are you most likely to choose? (Pass, Dribble, Shoot)
