CAD Modeling: Assemblies

The second part to CAD modeling is taking parts and turning them into assemblies. A part is usually just one object and assemblies are used to connect these objects together and cause them to move as well. The hardest part of assemblies for me though is the making of all of the parts for the assembly. "The most important part of the assembly is making sure that you have all of the parts built correctly... because if you don't the assembly parts will be under defined." (Tickoo location 215) The also of course tells you how to fit the assembly together, mostly by utilizing mates which are "... surfaces, lines, or points that will hold the parts in the proper orientation in an assembly... you can set them to be parallel, perpendicular, bound together, or at an angle from each other." (Tickoo location 1305) Keeping this in mind I drew out the basic idea behind my assembly to make sure that my parts would fit together.
It ended up looking like this below.
This prototype model was later built for the robotics club.
My question for you guys is, what have you had to plan out beforehand to make your job easier?

    It is cool that you are learning how to do 3D modeling. In answer to your question there are things I need to plan out for example my language arts final we had to plan out how the scenes we filmed would fit together.

      Hey Steven! I remember back to the planning out for the LA final we just made, it seemed odd that the planning took much longer than I thought it would although since we did it so well we didn't have all too many mistakes in our acting.
